Our Process
The team at the Rustic Ram hand pick, sort, brush and dye our fibres by hand. No two batches are the same, just as no two of our animals have the same personalities. While we are able to source any colour from the Gaywool range, our methods of dying ensure that the fibre maintains its integrity while getting a full depth of colour to each and every strand.
Dyed wool combines the natural performance of wool with enhanced creative and commercial possibilities. When high-quality dyes and responsible dyeing methods are used, the wool retains most of its natural properties while offering a wide range of colours.
All of the colours available through Gaywool are inspired by the natural and beautiful scenery of Tasmania. By supporting Gaywool, we are not only celebrating the beauty of this amazing country but are also supporting Australian made and sourced products from a family company just like ours.
Our Story

Whether you're a hand spinner, felter, weaver, or textile artist, organic fleece retains many of its natural qualities that are often lost in intensive production systems. These benefits include:
- Our methods of organic farming enable us to hand pick every fibre that we use ensuring only the best fibres are used in every handmade project
- Natural lanolin remains in the fleece, making fibres soft and easier to process while also maintaining the luxurious and rustic smell of fleece.
- All of our fleeces are sourced from Rare Flocks Farm where some of the rarest fleeces in the world are maintained and cared for and curated from birth.
